The Little Neck Pedestrian Safety Group started informally after Ms. Yu Chen, who was walking in a crosswalk, was struck and killed by a driver making a left turn from Marathon Parkway onto the east bound Horace Harding Expressway. Several parents from PS221Q, the North Hills School, witnessed this tragic incident firsthand in June 2023.   Many residents wanted to know what we could do to make Little Neck and Douglaston safer for students and families walking to and from school. Other residents, who had a history of being proactive in suggesting Safety Improvements to the NYCDOT, joined forces with these parents and other local community leaders.

This website was launched in March of 2024 as part of our efforts to spread the word and invite other members of the community to 1) take personal responsibility for pedestrian safety and 2) to become more engaged with New York City government and agencies to make pedestrian safety a priority. 

For example, we want to teach residents how to work with the NYCDOT, the NYPD, and elected officials to help make our neighborhood safer and better for pedestrians. Problem-solving, not politics, is our agenda. When public policy and public practices have an influence on pedestrian safety, our goal is to share information and keep people informed. Results, not rhetoric, is our aim!
